| Abdoulaye
Diabaté, the mythical child of the bambara kingdom of Segou was born
near his original roots in a village named "Cinzana-Gare" or "Gara"
in 1952 at 30 km from Ségou. Son of Baba Diabaté , traditional chief
of the
griot Diabaté
of Ségou and Assitan Dembélé, genius of the bambara song, Abdoulaye
Diabaté lived in the bosom of the crossing of two prominent person of
speaking and relating art.
Abdoulaye will sing with his mother since
he's eight on public places of villages .
As he has no elder or younger sister, Abdoulaye did all the housework
a woman should have done. This will refine all the inner gift he already
has to play on the sensitive strings of the music-lovers toward whom
his songs are directed.
He made coranic studies and went to French school at the same time.
This helped him a lot to excel in the knowledge of Men history.
He will get a C.A.P (diploma) in accountancy at the C.F.P. (school)
of Bamako in 1972. Since 14 years old, Abdoulaye will discover the hard
realities of scenes as a compositor, dancer and singer during his first
initiation to theatre with the pioneer movement.
Carried towards a certain consecration by
the small success of the local and inter- village artistic and cultural
meetings , the young musician began to discover in himself some talents
which will be confirmed during his first concert in 1975 with the Koulé
Star of Koutiala after the leaving of the singer.
Thus began Abdoulaye's career full of apprenticeship, education, sacrifice
and joy.
He
will be discovered by about a thousand young Sénoufos, Minyankas, Bobos,
etc during his first participation to the cultural artistic and sportive
week in Sikasso. The young singer has exceptional vocal potentialities.
He sings equally in all languages with an ease that frieze smugness.
He
becomes the idol of the Kénédougou under late Mamadou Guitar, Aldjouma
and other's rule. Pushed by his godmother and landlady Mamou Diallo,
woman who gave him shelter one night of 1972 because the weather was
bad, Abdoulaye improved his songs and searched the Malian culture.
His credo is the sanctimonious critic of our customs and daily life.
This is why he gives more pieces of advice than sing. He relates stories
and always remind to the listener's consciousness virtue, work, tolerance,
in short social morality.
Abdoulaye Diabaté is a
griot,
a messenger.
Year after year, the artist comes at the height of his fame. Between
1978 and 1988, he's awarded the price of the best singer of all the
regional weeks of Sikasso, he will know the national consecration in
1986 and 1988 with the regional orchestra of Sikasso the "Kéné
Star"; they were awarded the price of the best orchestra of the
two latest cultural, artistic and sportive biennial of the malian youth
with title like "Louanze".
As he's a state employee who conciliate with a lot of difficulties his
work and his musical career, he decided to take an availability to record
his first album. Published in 1995, it announced a new musical era which
will oblige him to distinguish himself from the traditional genre which
sticks to almost whole malian artist. Given efficiency and exportability.
Abdoulaye creates, improves the tone of his music and add new timbres,
realises a choreography which makes us forget that we're not in front
of art but real art. He win over public, big public, he's adulated by
national press.
The look Abdoulaye is born. He's now an image which can not goes unnoticed.
He's pursued by young people everywhere and they sing the chorus of
his songs. The myth Abdoulaye Diabaté takes place slowly.
Reference
musician in west Africa and great collector of stories of the malian
history, this singer is also a respected griot who want to understand
the contribution of his caste at the dawn of 2000. With democracy and
speech liberty, how can the point of view of griot still be important
in the malian society and in the contemporary world ? |
