| He
comes from Kéké, 19 km away from Djénné.
Married with one son, Boukadary’s artistic itinerary looks like
an assault course. Faced with the hostility of his parents who don’t
want to let him play his favourite instrument, the Jurukelen "a
type of one cord guitar". In 1981 he decided to capitalize on his
weaver talents in Mopti . After Mopti, he left for Lagos (Nigeria) where
he practices various petit works before joining Ivory Coast. There,
he works as labourer in Coffee and Cocoa farm. It is during this stay
that he made his first instrument the dan.
According
to Boukadary, the dan is a mythical instrument passed on to human beings
by the spirits (devil) for ages. It has got six cords and six arms,
it is play to welcome adventurers in the public place. They have to
report to the audience the episodes of their stay abroad.
In 1988,
Boukadary, came back in Mali and started a musical career. He went up
and down the whole region of Mopti with his beloved instrument. From
that time on, the only player of this instrument after the anticipated
retiring of his masters Ali COULIBALY and Koronbali, Boukadary had the
brilliant idea to add other instruments to the dan which is generally
played in solo. The elegance of Alou COULIBALY who caresses the calabash,
Moussa KONE’s guitar flight, Mamah DIABATE who chimes out the
n’goni with discretion and Moussa BOIRE’s bara doundoun
which gives the rhythm to the song, make the dan foli a very refined
music.
His full
and deep voice gives his music all its charm. The titles tounga, kaïssa,
Möti and others will permit you to discover and take pleasure into
this type of music made of a successful blend. This polyglot blue maker
from Djénné is on the foot print of Late Ali Farka TOURE. |
