The heart of Tama is Tom Diakité's expertise on the n'goni - a deeply funky hunter's harp from the Wasulu area of Mali - which he uses to lay down an earthly groove for his Bambara and Peul vocals. Tom has performed with stars as diverse as Mory Kanté, Salif Keïta and the Gypsy Kings, and is particularity recognised for his work with theatre directors Peter Brooke and Sotigui Kouyaté. Percussion maestro Djanuno Dabo has played with countless African artists including Angelique Kidjo and Caesaria Evora, and brings to Tama his prowess on djembé, congas, talking drum and a host of other percussion instruments. Known to Real World via his album 'Reel Sugar' with Bengali singer Paban Das Baul, Sam Mills was previously a founder member and guitarist of '80s ethno-funk experimentalists 23 Skidoo. As the name 'Tama' (a Bambara word meaning to walk') suggests, the trio's approach was to draw upon years of travelling memories, rather than trying to represent or revive a traditional folklore. The resulting sound is an amalgam of rhythmic playfulness and philosophical insight - music for the feet, the head and the heart! |
